Uniqueness, quality, knowledge and team work.
The Coastal Rowing Hungary (CRH) by Laszlo Boats NZ is a coastal rowing boat that has been specifically designed and manufactured in Hungary. It combines more than 35 years worth of industry experience gathered in New Zealand along with the passion and extended knowledge required for Hungarian rowing.
Our Story
The shared love for this sport is what brought Hungarian-born New Zealand ship engineer László Kertész and gold medalist world champion rower, Tamás Varga together. With joint effort and state of the art technological solutions, they decided to revive the rowing boat-building industry in Hungary. This was the birth of Coastal Rowing Hungary by Laszlo Boats NZ. Laszlo Boats NZ is New Zealand’s oldest and newest rowing boat-building company with over 35 years’ worth of boat-building experience.
Laszlo Boats NZ
A Coastal Rowing Hungary-val (CRH) a Laszlo csapat hazai vizekre és új távlatok felé evez.
If the name sounds Hungarian to you it is no coincidence. Laszlo Kertesz and Vera Bucsu took over an already world class boat manufacturing business back in 2015 with the intent to take it to the next level.
Laci and Vera were able to successfully combine their boat-manufacturing experience obtained in Hungary with the decade old expertise established in New Zealand. Due to their hard work, dedication, and continuous technological developments, the company has become even more successful even on international regattas around the World.
The increased possibility that coastal rowing becomes an Olympic sport urged Laszlo Boats to team up and form a strategic partnership with Tamás Varga, one of the most successful and prominent figures in Hungarian rowing. The goal of this unique partnership is not less than putting Hungarian boat manufacturing back on the World map.

Tamás Varga
After 20 years, 3 Olympics, World and European championship titles, you cannot simply put down the oars and just walk away from this magical sport overnight. When I decided to end my professional career I suddenly felt a huge gap and I knew right at that moment that this was not the end of my relationship with rowing. I also knew that I wanted to capitalize on my professional experience gained in the field of epoxy technologies and thus started to look for ways to be able to use it in boat manufacturing. It has been a dream of mine to build boats that exceed international standards and provide the exceptional speed and quality that I had always been looking for in my career.
Coastal rowing is a rapidly evolving branch of rowing and the freedom you get in a coastal rowing boat has captivated me. Wind, rough water, even waves can no longer stop you and be an obstacle but instead provide new and exciting ways to train and push yourself to the limit. The structure and stability of the hulls provide an opportunity to get on the water at times and places that we simply would not be able to with a regular rowing boat.
The recurring problem of transportation has also become easier as we can simply put our boat on top of our car and bring it wherever adventure takes us.. Quick-release riggers minimize the time spent on boat rigging and setup while providing a rock solid hold in the hardest conditions.
This freedom is what has enthralled me and has opened new doors to train and compete in places where we would not have been able to to do so before.
A kezdők is könnyen tudnak élvezetes perceket eltölteni a hajókban, mivel stabilitásának köszönhetően könnyen tudnak egyedül vízre szállni benne. Furthermore, due to their stability, coastal boats are very beginner friendly and therefore even rowers with no or minimal experience can easily get started and spend enjoyable time on the water right away. This ease of beginning was something that I had always missed and I believe prevented many more people from getting into rowing. Also this is why I would like to introduce this sport to as many people as possible so that they can personally experience the freedom that coastal rowing boats can offer. This requires the construction of a boat that is stable, surfs easily in rippled water and can be installed and dismantled in a relatively short period of time.
